January and February offer the lowest fares, with West Coast roundtrips often $500–600. September and November are also affordable. Avoid cherry blossom season (late March–April) and Golden Week for the cheapest prices.
Haneda (HND) is far more convenient — 30 minutes to central Tokyo by monorail. Narita (NRT) has more international routes and sometimes cheaper fares but is 60–90 minutes out. Budget carriers like Zipair only fly into Narita.
Zipair offers excellent value: modern 787 Dreamliners, decent seats, and fares 30–40% below full-service carriers. You'll pay extra for meals and bags, but the total cost is usually still significantly less than ANA or JAL economy.
