London Airport Tip - Flying to North America

For transatlantic routes to the US, Heathrow (LHR) is your best bet. The vast majority of direct long-haul services to New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco operate from Heathrow - including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines, and United. You get the widest choice of airlines, the most departure times, and generally the best connections if you are travelling from outside London. Gatwick also operates some long-haul services but the main premium and high-frequency transatlantic routes go through Heathrow. If you are travelling from North or East London, factor in the Crossrail (Elizabeth line) journey to Paddington then Heathrow Express - typically 45-55 minutes total from central London.

Thinking about earning miles on any of these routes? Smart With Points is our UK-focused newsletter covering Avios strategies, points earning, and how to maximise British Airways and Virgin Atlantic loyalty programmes. If you are flying BA or VS on these routes, it is worth knowing how many Avios or Virgin Points you will earn before you book.

Prefer to use points for one of these routes rather than paying cash? Award Travel Finder tracks the best award flight redemptions daily - including transatlantic routes on BA, Virgin, American, and United. Worth checking before you pay cash, especially for the summer dates above.
