Which Airport for Which Destination

• SFO (San Francisco International): Best for all long-haul international routes - Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East, and Mexico. The International Terminal houses virtually every major carrier. United, Delta, American, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, British Airways, Air France, KLM, Swiss, Qantas, and Aer Lingus all depart from SFO.

• OAK (Oakland International): Your go-to for short-haul budget domestic routes. Frontier Airlines runs ultra-cheap fares to Las Vegas, and the airport is easy to reach from the East Bay. No BART connection but AC Transit and rideshares are quick. Drop-off is fast and security lines are typically shorter than SFO.

• SJC (San Jose International): Ideal for South Bay residents. Frontier serves LA from SJC at prices that are hard to beat. Parking is more affordable than SFO and the airport is compact and fast to move through. Worth checking if you live in Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, or San Jose.

• Pro Tip - Mix Airports: Consider flying out of OAK or SJC on budget carriers for domestic legs, but use SFO for international departures where nonstop options, lounge access, and premium cabin upgrades are vastly superior.

Transit Tips by Airport

• SFO: BART connects directly to SFO's International Terminal - fastest and cheapest option from San Francisco and the East Bay. Allow 45-60 minutes from downtown SF. International Terminal has excellent United Club, Polaris Lounge, and international carrier lounges including Cathay Pacific and Air France.

• OAK: No BART direct to terminal - take BART to Coliseum station then the OAK connector shuttle (free). Rideshares from downtown Oakland take 15-20 minutes. No major airline lounges but security is a breeze.

• SJC: Drive or rideshare is most practical. VTA light rail has a station at SJC but is slow from most Bay Area points. Alaska and United have lounge presence in the main terminal. Parking rates are among the most competitive of the three airports.

• JetBlue Mint SFO-JFK at $1,147 over Christmas: JetBlue's Mint cabin (lie-flat pods, tapas-style dining, speedy Wi-Fi) rarely dips this low on peak holiday dates. Book immediately - this price will not last.

• Alaska Business SFO-Cabo at $936 for late February: Most people don't think to search Business on short-haul Mexico routes. Alaska's First Class product on this route is a genuinely pleasant upgrade and $936 is well below what competitors charge.
